At MTN Nigeria’s recent “Data on Trial” event in Lagos, local creators turned the spotlight toward one of the fastest-growing online communities in the country: gamers.
Popular Nigerian streamer Ayere-Victor Great Ehinome, known as Khalamanja, directly asked company executives if MTN could introduce specialized data plans for gaming and streaming, similar to its existing YouTube offers.
For local creators and esports players, internet data is a daily work tool. Downloading large game patches, playing online without lag, and streaming live feeds to viewers require massive amounts of bandwidth. Standard data packages often run out quickly, making it costly to keep up.
Idowu Adesokan, MTN Nigeria’s General Manager for Segments and Devices, acknowledged the growing demand. He stated that the network is actively monitoring user habits and speaking with game platforms to explore potential partnerships. While MTN stopped short of announcing a new product, Adesokan told the audience to “watch this space.”
Although a dedicated plan is not live yet, the discussion marks an important shift. Telecom companies are beginning to realize that Nigerian gamers are not just casual phone users, but power consumers who need tailored data deals to build their careers and communities.
