A prominent Nigerian gymnastics coach, Anthony Asuquo, has been found dead under circumstances that remained unclear, sparking concern and calls for an urgent investigation from members of the gymnastics community and the public.

Asuquo, the founder of Tony International Gymnastics (TIG) Club, reportedly died suddenly after alerting friends that ₦11 million had allegedly been withdrawn from his bank account. Details surrounding the incident were still sketchy, and authorities were yet to release an official statement on the cause of death.

The news of Asuquo’s passing has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s sports community, particularly within gymnastics circles where he was widely respected for his contributions to talent development. He was instrumental in grooming several athletes and recently led TIG gymnasts to medal-winning performances at the 2024 Women’s Artistic Gymnastics event in Anadia, Portugal.

Friends, colleagues, and stakeholders have since called on security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, urging that all questions be adequately addressed.

As of the time of filing this report, relevant authorities have not issued an official response, while tributes continued to pour in for the late coach, remembered for his passion, discipline, and commitment to advancing gymnastics in Nigeria.
