Nigerian Legion Seeks More Support For Veterans’ Widows

The Nigerian Legion has called for greater support and protection for widows of former servicemen and other vulnerable women in Nigeria, saying more attention is needed to improve their welfare and living conditions.

The chairman of the organisation, Morenike Henry, made the call in a message to mark the International Women’s Day, noting that many widows linked to former military personnel still face economic hardship and social challenges.

Henry said the legion had continued to implement welfare initiatives to support widows and vulnerable women, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to him, the organisation is mandated by law to support the welfare of veterans and their families, including widows, through programmes coordinated under its Women Auxiliary wing.

He explained that the legal framework guiding the legion empowers it to organise women, including widows of former servicemen, to support welfare, rehabilitation and fundraising activities for veterans and their families.

Henry said the organisation had recently distributed support kits and gifts to widows in December 2025 as part of efforts to ease their hardship.

He added that the theme of the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration, “Give to Gain,” encourages generosity and collaboration in advancing the welfare and recognition of women in society.

The chairman congratulated Nigerian women and women around the world on the occasion and reaffirmed the legion’s commitment to programmes that promote the welfare of women, particularly widows and other vulnerable groups.
