Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer Chukwuka Ekweani, alias CKay, has shared his journey in the music industry, revealing that he had to disobey his parents to follow his dream.
The songwriter, in a Twitch livestream chat with Carter Efe, shared that his parents were against his career choice. He went further to say that he had dropped out of school to do music while still in university at the 100 level.
Ckay narrated that he had to leave home at the age of 19 in Kaduna because his parents opposed his singing. ”I came down to Lagos to chase my passion in music. When I arrived in Lagos, I wrote a long letter and sent it to my mum via Blackberry,” he disclosed, stating that he was staying with a friend when he first arrived, but got a one-bedroom apartment afterwards. He also noted that he was making a profit as a producer working with four different studios.
While the singer came to the limelight following the release of his track ‘Container,’ his song ‘Love Nwantiti’ helped propel him to the global stage, debuting at number one after the launch of the Billboard Afrobeats chart on 29 March 2022. The song on 9 May 2022, became the first African song to surpass one billion streams on Spotify and has long since been recognised as “the biggest hit in African history.
Ckay is signed to Boyfriend Music, Warner Music Africa and Atlanta Records.
