Nigerian Red Cross Society has commended the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the release of $200,000 for the purchase of food and non-food items for the Bauchi State 2024 flood victims.
The Red Cross also expressed dismay that the 2024 floods in Bauchi led to 24 deaths, displaced over 85,000 people, disrupted more than 14,000 households, and left communities grappling with the loss of homes and livelihoods.
The Nigerian President of the Red Cross, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga said that palliatives such as rice, beans and other essential food supplies to the flood victims were meant to alleviate hunger, as they also received blankets, mosquito nets, and dignity kits for their health and safety.
Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga who was in Bauchi in a collaborative effort to distribute relief materials to the victims provided by ECOWAS, stated that they were in addition providing cash support to empower them to meet immediate needs, “whether it’s repairing a home, seeking medical care or sending a child back to school.”
