Three Nigerian students have etched their names on the global academic stage after winning gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale in Rome, Italy. This feat has drawn widespread praise while sparking conversations about education, national pride and the need to celebrate excellence above ethnic divisions.

The students — Chimdiebube Onwubiko, Don Anele Munachimso and Onyedikachi Egejurum — emerged among the world’s brightest in Mathematics and Science at the competition, which brought together outstanding young minds from more than 150 countries.
Their journey to the global stage was made possible through the sponsorship of Alex Onyia, an education advocate and CEO of Educare, who funded their participation after they distinguished themselves at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad.
Announcing the achievement on X, Onyia initially celebrated the gold medals won by Chimdiebube Onwubiko and Don Anele Munachimso before later revealing that Don Anele had also clinched another gold medal in Science, making him one of the competition’s standout performers.
He subsequently announced that Onyedikachi Egejurum had also secured a gold medal, emerging as the world’s best in Mathematics in the Primary Category.
“The investment is worth it,” Onyia wrote, adding that the victories marked “the beginning of greatness for the country.”

The remarkable achievement has renewed conversations about the immense potential of Nigerian children when provided with the right opportunities and support. Many Nigerians have praised Onyia for personally sponsoring the students, describing his intervention as an example of how private individuals can help bridge gaps in the nation’s education sector.
While many celebrated the students’ success, the moment was briefly clouded by tribal comments on social media, with some users attempting to reduce the achievement to ethnic narratives rather than a national accomplishment.
The remarks drew swift criticism from comedian and actor MC Lively, who condemned attempts to tribalise the students’ victories, stressing that academic excellence should unite Nigerians instead of deepening existing divisions.

His reaction resonated with many social media users, who argued that the students’ achievement belongs to the entire country and should inspire greater investment in young talents regardless of their ethnic background.
The online exchanges have also reignited discussions around what many users now refer to as the “Olodo Uprising,” a phrase increasingly used on social media to criticise the growing tendency to celebrate mediocrity while downplaying intellectual achievements and academic excellence.
Beyond the medals, many observers say the students’ triumph sends a powerful message that Nigeria is rich in talent capable of competing with the very best in the world. They argue that with sustained investment in education, mentorship and innovation, more Nigerian students can excel on global platforms and further enhance the country’s reputation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
For many Nigerians, the victories in Rome are not just personal milestones for the three students but a reminder that excellence thrives when talent is identified, nurtured and supported.
