Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said insecurity is abating across the country, asserting that Nigerians are increasingly able to sleep better as the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration take effect.

Akpabio made the assertion while speaking with State House Correspondents after leading a delegation of National Assembly members to President Tinubu’s Ikoyi residence in Lagos to felicitate with him on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The delegation included Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and other members of the National Assembly.

The Senate President said the legislature was satisfied with the direction of the administration’s reforms, particularly in the areas of the economy and security.

“We believe he is doing well. These reforms are working and, as far as we are concerned, insecurity is abating and people are able to sleep well,” Akpabio said.

While acknowledging that pockets of security challenges remained in some parts of the country, he maintained that the situation was improving.

Akpabio also reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting the administration through legislation designed to strengthen the economy, improve security and accelerate national development.

He cited the ongoing reform of Nigeria’s tax system as one of the major areas of legislative cooperation between the Executive and Legislature.

According to him, the Federal Government’s tax reform programme, built around four major pieces of legislation, is aimed at modernising the country’s tax administration.

He said the National Assembly had also prioritised the speedy consideration of legislation and presidential nominations required to facilitate the implementation of government policies.

Akpabio described the legislature as a “worthy partner” of the Tinubu administration, saying lawmakers would continue to enact laws necessary to support the government’s reform agenda.

The Senate President also used the occasion of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary to call for greater national unity, urging Nigerians to renew the spirit of brotherhood, mutual responsibility and love for the country.

He appealed to citizens to look beyond ethnic and religious differences and embrace tolerance, patriotism and peaceful coexistence, saying these were essential to sustaining the country’s progress.
