Nigerians, Other Migrants Die In Central Mediterranean Shipwreck

International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reports a devastating loss of life as a vessel carrying 86 individuals sinks off Libya’s coast, leaving a death toll of 61, including women and children.

The recent incident, marked as a heartbreaking disaster, unfolded in the treacherous waters of the central Mediterranean, highlighting the extreme dangers faced by migrants pursuing safer havens in Europe.

According to the IOM, the sunken boat, which departed from Zwara in Libya, held individuals from Nigeria, Gambia, and several other African nations.

“The central Mediterranean remains perilous for migrants, as evidenced by this tragic event,” stated the IOM, shedding light on the ongoing hazards along this migration route.

Among the 86 individuals onboard, 25 survived and were swiftly transported to a detention centre in Libya. The IOM team provided necessary medical assistance, ensuring the survivors were in good health, despite the harrowing ordeal.

Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesperson for IOM, expressed dismay over the distressing statistic of over 2,250 migrant deaths recorded this year alone along the central Mediterranean route. He underscored the urgent need for more effective measures to prevent such tragic losses at sea, the AFP reported.

The central Mediterranean path has emerged as the deadliest route for migrants globally, registering 1,727 fatalities and disappearances along its shores in the first half of 2023. Libya and Tunisia continue to serve as primary launch points for migrants attempting the perilous sea journeys toward Italy and, ultimately, Europe.

According to the IOM’s report, drowning remains the leading cause of death on migration routes worldwide, with 2,200 recorded fatalities in the first half of 2023. Italy has witnessed a significant surge in migrant arrivals, with approximately 140,000 individuals making landfall this year.

The overwhelming majority, around 91 percent, hailed from Tunisia, resulting in heightened pressure on the Italian island of Lampedusa due to the influx.

The IOM stressed that these figures likely underestimate the actual number of fatalities, signifying a dire need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of migrants seeking better lives across these perilous routes.
