The National Sports Commission (NSC) is on a determined path to position Nigeria as a premier global sporting hub, as showcased by the ongoing 2025/2028 International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) Judges Course in Abuja.

The event runs from 10th to 14th May and has attracted participants from across the continent, including Algeria, Egypt, Cameroon, South Africa, and Nigeria.

With the guidance of esteemed Russian FIG official Dimitri Andreev, the course aims to cultivate high-calibre gymnastics judges who will contribute to the future growth of the sport in Africa.

Under the leadership of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, the NSC has urged national sports federations to elevate their efforts in local talent development and international representation, a challenge they are embracing wholeheartedly.

“We commend the Nigeria Gymnastics Federation for its exceptional organisation of this event,” the NSC stated, highlighting that such initiatives are part of a wider national strategy to attract international sporting events and enhance capacity development across various sports.

“This course is another significant milestone in our mission to make Nigeria a preferred destination for international sporting activities,” remarked Hon. Bukola Olopade, the NSC’s Director General.
In a statement signed by the SA media to the DG of National Sports Commission, Kola Daniel, Nigeria’s reputation as a regional sports powerhouse continues to strengthen.

Earlier this year, the country proudly hosted the ECOWAS African Wrestling Championship, which saw participation from 11 nations in honour of ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary. Additionally, in late 2024, Nigeria successfully hosted the 2nd African Military Games — “AMGA Abuja 2024” — further reinforcing its leadership role in African sports diplomacy.

Moreover, several Nigerian sports federation presidents are making strides on the global stage. Francis Orbih (badminton), Daniel Igali (wrestling), and Prince Kelvin Erhunmwunse (gymnastics) have recently secured notable international positions within their respective sports federation bodies, paving the way for others to follow suit.

As the FIG judges course continues in Abuja, the NSC is unwavering in its commitment to creating opportunities, building expertise, and solidifying Nigeria’s status as a centre for sporting excellence.
