A former minister of education,
Dr Oby Ezekwesili on Monday said Nigeria’s democracy has degraded into a shambles in all the indicators that define functional democracies.

According to her, the country’s democracy since 1999 has steadily lost the confidence of citizens and the situation is worsening presently.

Ezekwesili stated this at the high-level emergency stakeholders’ engagement on the 2027 general elections organised by the Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) with the theme: “Actualising Credible 2027 Elections in Nigeria.

The former minister who is the Chairman of Convening Committee of MCE said by 2023, only 23% of registered voters voted in the presidential election that formed the current administration.

She said that clearly showed Nigeria had departed from even the low average known across Africa which is about 47% and compared to global data the country was less than one-third in voter participation in elections.

Other speakers at the event including the Labour Party, Peter Obi, that of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo and their African Action Congress (AAC) counterpart, Omoyele Sowore, amongst others expressed the same worry.
