Stakeholders from government institutions, security agencies, emergency response organisations, postal services, the technology ecosystem and development partners have converged in Abuja for the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System Workshop aimed at advancing the implementation of Nigeria’s digital addressing framework.
At the workshop, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, said the newly launched National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System will revolutionise commerce, strengthen national security and improve emergency response by enabling every building in Nigeria to have a unique digital address.
Speaking on the theme, “Operationalising the Nigerian Digital Postcode for National Security and Public Safety,” Tijani said the initiative would eliminate the long-standing challenge of vague directions and inaccurate addressing systems across the country.
“We’re going to put to an end a popular joke that we have in our country, where you ask for directions and they say, ‘when you get to the bottom of the street, take left; when you get to the left, take right.’ It actually costs us significantly,” he said. “Every single building, including those in rural areas, will have a unique code, the same way you have everywhere in the world,” he said, adding that the project enjoys the backing of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Tijani clarified that the digital postcode system was not merely a policy but an infrastructure project designed to support governance, security and economic growth.
“If you’re a small business owner and your customers order food or products to their homes and offices, delivery riders will no longer move from one building to another trying to find customers. They can now pinpoint the exact location,” he said. He described the initiative as a critical component of the government’s investment in digital infrastructure, noting that connectivity alone was insufficient if citizens and businesses could not be accurately located. The minister disclosed that the first phase of the rollout would commence in October, beginning with selected states, with plans to cover a significant number of states before the end of the year.
The Postmaster-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, added that the system would enhance logistics operations through an AI-powered routing mechanism, enabling businesses to determine accurate delivery costs and timelines. “Right now, companies often estimate delivery charges. With more precision, they can determine the actual cost and expected delivery time. We become a more efficient society, environmentally, financially and operationally,” she said.
The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is expected to provide a standardised national addressing framework capable of identifying specific buildings across urban and rural communities, positioning Nigeria among a select group of countries with advanced digital addressing infrastructure. The workshop comes amid growing calls for the integration of technology-driven solutions into Nigeria’s security and administrative systems to address challenges associated with unstructured addressing and location identification.
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has said the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System could significantly enhance intelligence gathering, emergency response, policing, border management and financial crime investigations through more precise location identification.
Represented by the National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Major General Adamu Garba Laka, NSA Ribadu noted that the initiative presents an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture by improving coordination among relevant agencies. He explained that an effective digital addressing system would enable security and emergency responders to identify locations accurately, facilitate quicker interventions during crises, support investigations and improve the delivery of public services. According to him, the full benefits of the initiative can only be realised through sustained collaboration among stakeholders responsible for its implementation.
LEADERSHIP reports that the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is envisioned as a transformative tool capable of providing every location in Nigeria with a unique and identifiable address, thereby supporting planning, governance and sustainable national development.
