Nigeria’s Fintech Industry Aligns With Global Changing Dynamics At NFW 2026

Nigeria’s fintech industry is broadening its appeal to align with global payment industry which is addressing complex payment systems.

The global payments industry is currently changing rapidly and customers increasingly expect payments to be instant, simple, and embedded within the services they already use, while businesses require technology that can support more complex transactions at scale.

This is raising the standard for payment companies, placing greater emphasis on reliability, connectivity, and the quality of customer experience.

This forward-looking approach will be at the heart of its participation at Nigeria Fintech Week (NFW) 2026.

In its ninth edition, NFW 2026 will convene stakeholders across commerce, technology, banking, investment, academia, and regulation around the theme, “Legacy in Motion: Powering the Digital Renaissance.” The theme reflects an industry moving beyond its early breakthroughs towards strengthening the institutions, infrastructure and standards that will define its next phase.

According to ’DeRemi Atanda, Managing Director, Remita, one of the event keynote speakers, Nigeria has an opportunity to translate its strong position as a globally recognised fintech innovation hub into wider economic impact as envisaged in the country’s Payment System Vision 2028.

“As fintech becomes more embedded in the economy, the standard changes. We are no longer building only for adoption; we are building dependence. Individuals and businesses increasingly organise important parts of their lives and operations around digital financial services, and that places a much higher responsibility on the technology behind them,” Atanda said.

“The opportunity for Nigeria is to build with that level of responsibility in mind – combining innovation with the resilience, intelligence and scale required of financial infrastructure that people and businesses can depend on every day.”

For Remita, this means continuing to deliver payment capabilities that respond to both institutional requirements and the changing expectations of individuals and businesses in Nigeria, Africa and across the world.

With a bold entrance into the consumer segment evidenced by its strong showing in the ongoing Dangote Refinery IPO offer, Remita will be introducing its new generation mobile app that reflects the changing needs of consumers and businesses at the NFW 2026.

The app reflects a major evolution at Remita. Drawing on years of experience across enterprise and institutional payments, Remita is applying the same depth to offering more direct financial experiences to individuals and small businesses, with an emphasis on making everyday transactions simpler while retaining the reliability expected of an established payment infrastructure provider.

The company’s sponsorship of NFW also reflects its continued support for the accelerated expansion of the industry across different layers of talent development, ecosystem collaboration, mentorship, and easy access to national and continental opportunities.

“The real strength of an industry becomes visible in what it is capable of sustaining,” Atanda said. “Can its infrastructure support the next wave of businesses? Can its standards keep pace as the market becomes more sophisticated? Can companies build locally with the quality and ambition to compete beyond their home markets? These are increasingly important questions for Nigerian fintech, and established players have a responsibility to help raise that bar.”

That responsibility gives practical meaning to the idea of “Legacy in Motion.” Remita’s history provides institutional knowledge and perspective, but its greater value lies in how that experience is applied: to more complex payment problems, higher expectations of financial technology and a market whose opportunities increasingly extend beyond national boundaries.

As payments become more deeply connected to commerce, financial services and everyday economic activity, Remita is focused on strengthening the capabilities behind those interactions and making them simpler for the people and organisations that rely on them.

Remita has evolved alongside Nigeria and Africa’s payments industry, continuously flexing its outlook as regulatory, technology and customer expectations have continued to transform the market. This has given the company a deep understanding of how payment is evolving from standalone transactions into an increasingly embedded part of commerce and digital experiences – and where the next opportunities lie.

Also, recently the Group Chairman, Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), Dr Umaru Kwairanga, called for more collaboration among regulators, financial institutions, technology companies and other stakeholders to deepen financial inclusion and strengthen Nigeria’s digital financial ecosystem.

Kwairanga made the call in Lagos while delivering his address as Chairman of the third Business Journal Fintech and Financial Inclusion Roundtable.

Nigeria’s fintech industry is entering its most consequential phase since the emergence of digital payments.

For more than a decade, fintech companies transformed how Nigerians pay, save, borrow and transfer money. They expanded financial inclusion, attracted significant investment capital and positioned Nigeria as one of Africa’s leading technology and financial services markets. Success was largely measured by customer acquisition, transaction volumes and valuation growth. Investors rewarded speed and scale. Regulators prioritized innovation and market development. That environment is changing.

As funding conditions become more selective, cyber threats become more sophisticated and regulatory expectations continue to rise, the defining challenge for fintech leaders is no longer growth, it is resilience. The institutions that emerge as long term winners will not necessarily be those with the largest customer bases or highest transaction volumes. They will be those that earn the confidence of regulators, investors, customers and strategic partners through strong governance, effective risk management and credible compliance frameworks.
