Nigeria’s Global Influence Rising Under Ibrahim, Are — CSOs

Accredited Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) have said Nigeria’s global influence is rising following the appointments of Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim as the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador Kayode Are as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States.

The groups, under the umbrella of the Civil Society Organisation on Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative (CSCHEI), said the two appointments have significantly strengthened Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and enhanced its capacity to shape decisions at both multilateral and bilateral levels.

In a statement issued by its Director-General, Mr. Kunle Yusuff, CSCHEI said the appointments reflected growing confidence in Nigeria’s engagement with international institutions and signalled the country’s renewed relevance in global affairs.

According to the organisation, Nigeria’s increasing acceptability within international partnership and funding frameworks demonstrates that the country is steadily regaining prominence on the global stage.

The group also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing experienced diplomats and administrators with extensive international networks to represent Nigeria at a crucial period in the nation’s development.

CSCHEI stated that Nigeria stands to benefit from stronger executive-level engagement with the United States while also gaining improved access to development opportunities within the United Nations system.

The organisation particularly highlighted the performance of Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim since assuming office as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations on April 20, 2026.

It noted that Ibrahim ended a nearly two-year vacancy in Nigeria’s substantive representation at the UN following the presentation of his credentials to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

CSCHEI further pointed to his election as Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly Fifth Committee, the influential body responsible for overseeing the UN’s budget, administration and human resources.

According to the organisation, the development places a Nigerian in charge of one of the most strategic committees within the United Nations at a time when the organisation is navigating financial pressures and institutional reforms.

The civil society platform also credited Ambassador Ibrahim with advancing Nigeria’s position on United Nations Security Council reform and security challenges facing the Sahel region.

It said he had consistently reiterated Nigeria’s support for the creation of a permanent African seat on the Security Council, describing such representation as critical to achieving equitable global governance.

CSCHEI further noted that the ambassador has continued to project President Tinubu’s economic reform agenda before international audiences, presenting the reforms as measures designed to create long-term economic growth despite short-term challenges.

The organisation also cited what it described as strengthened protocol recognition for Nigeria’s mission at the United Nations, noting that senior UN officials extended diplomatic courtesies ahead of Ambassador Ibrahim’s presentation of credentials.

On Ambassador Kayode Are, who assumed office as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States on May 21, 2026, CSCHEI said his presentation of credentials to United States President Donald Trump at the White House marked a major milestone in Nigeria-US relations.

The organisation noted that the event formally restored Nigeria’s ambassadorial representation in Washington after an extended vacancy and signalled renewed diplomatic engagement between both countries.

According to CSCHEI, Ambassador Are’s appointment has already opened opportunities for stronger cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in the areas of security, economic development and international partnerships.

The group highlighted his experience as former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and former National Security Adviser, saying the positions equipped him with the expertise needed to manage complex diplomatic and security engagements.

It added that Ambassador Are had established engagements with key American institutions, improved information-sharing mechanisms and strengthened collaboration with law enforcement agencies on issues affecting Nigerians in the diaspora, including fraud and human trafficking.

CSCHEI also credited the ambassador with developing mechanisms aimed at addressing security concerns raised by American investors, a move it said could improve investor confidence and attract additional foreign direct investment into Nigeria.

The organisation observed that the appointments form part of the federal government’s broader efforts to restore Nigeria’s diplomatic representation across strategic foreign missions following the recall of ambassadors in 2023.

It argued that with Ambassador Ibrahim now chairing the United Nations General Assembly’s budget committee and Ambassador Are gaining direct access to the highest levels of the United States government, Nigeria has strengthened its influence in two of the world’s most important centres of global decision-making.

“With Ambassador Ibrahim now chairing the UN Budget Committee and Ambassador Are opening direct access at the White House, Nigeria has secured high-level advocacy at both the UN funding table and the US executive table within 60 days of their resumption,” the statement said.
