In a terrible blow to Nigeria’s aspirations of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles saw their chances diminish on Friday as South Africa and Benin Republic achieved vital wins, further widening the gap in Group C.

South Africa took a commanding step towards clinching the group’s sole ticket for their second World Cup appearance with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Lesotho at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. This win propelled the Bafana Bafana to the top of the group with 16 points, leaving Nigeria trailing nine points behind in fourth place.

Meanwhile, Benin Republic surged into second place with 11 points after edging out Zimbabwe 1-0 in Abidjan.

The Super Eagles are set to square off against Rwanda on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Currently, Nigeria has managed only seven points from six matches. Even with a win against Rwanda, they would still find themselves in third place with ten points, trailing behind South Africa and Benin.
