The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has commended the leadership of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT, for spearheading a timely public health awareness campaign, describing the initiative as both necessary and impactful in the current national climate.

Shaibu gave the commendation while serving as the Chairman of the occasion at the 2026 Public Health Awareness and Wellbeing Conference, organised by the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel in collaboration with Alliance Hospital and Dr Physiq Global Health & Wellness Centre, held at the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat, Utako, Abuja.

Speaking about the conference theme, “Products Integrity, Regulatory Compliance, and Safety Standards – tackling critical challenges in product safety, patients’ trust, and public health protection,” Shaibu emphasised the urgency of prioritising health in everyday life.

“Our health is critical, owing to the situation we find ourselves in today. It demands regular medical check-ups because our mental health and stability are essential to our daily living,” he said. “Whether you like it or not, health is wealth.”

He called on all partners involved in the initiative to sustain their collaboration, urging professional bodies such as the Nigerian Medical Association to take a cue from the Correspondents’ Chapel. “All partners to this programme should not stop at this point. It is important that the Nigerian Medical Association and other professional bodies emulate what the Correspondents’ Chapel is doing today. You should also be part of it,” he added.

Highlighting reforms at the National Institute for Sports, Shaibu disclosed that since assuming office, he has introduced a culture of daily fitness within the institute. “At NIS, we dedicate at least one hour on Tuesday and Thursday to exercise, to keep fit. I’m sure you are aware of the progress reports since I came on board,” he noted, attributing his appointment to the foresight of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“This is also an appreciation to Mr President for his farsightedness in the appointments he has made,” Shaibu stated, while also reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey and his personal experiences during that struggle.

In a passionate appeal to public officeholders, Shaibu cautioned against complacency and overreliance on government funding. “Leaders must stop making excuses and begin to think outside the box. We cannot always wait for government funding before doing what is necessary,” he said.

He revealed a significant milestone achieved under his leadership at NIS, noting that the institute now has a trained and certified medical doctor specialising in marathon races. “It took me seven months to ensure we secured a trained medical doctor for marathon events. He returned to the country just yesterday to resume duties with NIS,” he disclosed.

According to Shaibu, these reforms have been implemented without waiting for budgetary releases. “Yes, the NIS budget has been passed, but we don’t have to wait for its release before carrying out meaningful reforms. What we are doing now is a replication of what I did as Deputy Governor in Edo State,” he explained.

Looking ahead, he expressed optimism about Nigeria’s participation on the global stage. “I can assure Nigerians that going forward, we will be participating in all international competitions, including future World Cups. Only when we embark on services that work can Nigeria truly become better for all of us,” he said.
