The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) imposed load shedding measures following a total generation collapse at Egbin Power Station, impacting electricity supply across Nigeria, especially in the Lagos region.
The system operator noted that on April 28, 2026, at about 8:21pm, Egbin – the largest plant on the national grid – dropped from approximately 641MW to zero output.
NISO attributed the incident to a central compressor failure and circulating water pump malfunction, requiring an emergency shutdown of all units.
Power delivery to Lagos faced additional constraints from the forced outage of the Osogbo–Ikeja West 330kV line.
According to the operator, the resulting supply shortfall prompted NISO to enact load shedding to maintain grid stability and prevent wider disturbances.
Also, it said operators activated contingency plans, reallocating loads to distribution companies with priority for critical infrastructure and optimising output from other plants.
NISO noted the inconvenience to consumers in Lagos and surrounding areas, stating that stakeholders are working to resolve the issue.
