NLC Holds Peaceful March Over Rising Insecurity In Kano

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kano State chapter, on Wednesday, complied with the call for nationwide protest and organised a peaceful march to spotlight the growing security challenges facing the country.

The demonstrators walked from the Murtala Muhammad Library to the Government House, calling for better security for all. The group was led by Dr. Muttaka Yusha’u, Head of the Education Department at the NLC National Secretariat, Abuja, representing the NLC National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

Speaking during the protest, Dr. Yusha’u said the action was part of the NLC’s nationwide efforts to promote peace and draw urgent attention to the worsening state of insecurity across Nigeria.

“There cannot be peace without security,” he said. “Workers are not only those in offices. Market women, farmers, and traders are all part of the workforce, and insecurity affects everyone, both at work and within our communities.”

At the end of the procession, the labour union submitted a formal letter and a memorandum to the Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, calling on him to relay the concerns of Nigerian workers to President Bola Tinubu.

He explained that the memorandum presented to the governor detailed the alarming increase in banditry and violent crimes across the country, which continued to threaten lives, livelihoods, and social stability. He urged the federal government to scale up its response to the security crisis and adopt a more inclusive strategy that involves all stakeholders.

Receiving the protesters on behalf of the governor, the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Faroukh Ibrahim, applauded the peaceful nature of the march and described it as evidence of a healthy relationship between the Kano State Government and organised labour.

“This gathering reflects cooperation rather than confrontation,” Ibrahim said. “It shows that government and labour can engage constructively on issues of national importance.”

He said the state government remained committed to tackling security challenges through collaboration with security agencies and other relevant partners, while assuring the NLC that Governor Yusuf would transmit the union’s letter to the Presidency without delay.

The chairman of the NLC, Kano State Council, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa Riruwai, acknowledged steps taken by both federal and state authorities to address insecurity but insisted that stronger and more coordinated actions were needed.

“It is reassuring that the President has initiated measures such as setting up a committee on security,” Riruwai said. “As a labour movement, our duty is to commend progress where it exists and to raise the alarm where gaps remain.”

He described security as the foundation of national development, noting that Kano’s relative calm should not distract from the broader challenges confronting the country.

Riruwai also drew attention to the risks faced daily by civilians and security operatives, calling for improved protection, welfare, and support for those working to keep the country safe.

He expressed hope that collective action by state governors, working in synergy with the federal government, would lead to tangible improvements in the security situation nationwide.
