The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), in partnership with Diatom Impact Foundation, founded by Dr. Akindele Akintoye, has donated sanitary towels to all female inmates in Custodial Centres nationwide, to assist in promoting menstrual hygiene and health.
During the presentation at the national headquarters of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) in Abuja, the NMA President, Dr. Bala M. Audu, ably represented by the first vice President, Dr. Benjamin Oluwatosin Olowojebutu, was received by the Controller General of the NCoS, Mr Sylvester Nwakuze.
The NMA noted that following the findings of the Senate Investigative Panel on Nigerian Correctional Centrew, which found poor menstrual hygiene of female inmates, a worrisome concern, the NMA took up the challenge and through advocacy and goodwill, it partnered with Dr. Akindele Akintoye of DIATOM Foundation to make donations of sanitary towels to all female inmates in Nigerian correctional centres to assist in promoting menstrual hygiene and health.
Speaking further, Olowojebutu highlighted NMA’s numerous efforts as corporate social responsibility (CSR) and expressed that the visit and donation were a promise kept, adding that the partnership also intended to make available mental health personnel at various correctional centres in Nigeria.
Also speaking, Dr. Akintoye expressed his love for humanity and the need for philanthropy as a fulfilment of living life from various lived experiences, saying that he promised to sustain his philanthropist act as well as do more with time.
he CG of the Nigeria Correctional Service, in his response, appreciated both parties and the donations, expressing the willingness of the NCoS for future collaboration to better the experience of inmates and make custodial facilities fully correctional.
