The Mayor of Nnewi North local government area in Anambra State, Hon Echezona Anazodo, has refuted the allegations of illegal levies and extortion at Agboedo United Market, warning purveyors of fake news to desist.

Anazodo gave the warning during an interview in his office at Nnewi North Local Government secretariat.

He warned against misinformation, saying it only leads to mischief. The mayor advised the general public to stay away from unverified claims which are politically-motivated and aimed at undermining the progressive reforms of Nnewi North Local Government.

Anazodo denied the allegations and assured the public that all levies and fees would be lawful, transparent, and in the best interest of market development. He said no ₦1.6 billion levy exists anywhere and the claim that traders were being forced to pay ₦4.5 million per shop, was entirely false. He said his administration had not issued such directive.

The mayor also countered the allegation that traders were being harassed or threatened with eviction. He said Nnewi North Local Government remained committed to protecting the rights and welfare of all business owners in Agboedo Market.

Hon. Anazodo also made it clear that his administration operates an open-door policy. Traders with genuine concerns are encouraged to seek clarification directly from him rather than relying on misinformation.

He said that the timing of the allegations suggested a deliberate attempt by opposition elements to disrupt the peace and tarnish the reputation of the Local Government developmental efforts.

The Nnewi North Mayor urged the media and the public to verify facts before circulating unsubstantiated claims. He advised traders to disregard sensationalised reports and instead engage directly with the accurate information from the Local Government.

Hon. Anazodo declared that his administration was committed to good governance, accountability, and the economic empowerment of Nnewi residents. He called on all stakeholders to support these efforts rather than succumb to divisive propaganda.
