A gas pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has exploded near the Tebijor, Okpele, and Ikpopo communities in the Gbaramatu Kingdom of Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.

A community leader in Ijaghala Community, who preferred anonymity, revealed that the explosion occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, 10 December.

According to the source, the explosion occurred as a result of pressure release from the gas manifold at Okigbe, which connects Chevron, SHELL and NGC gas lines.

The people in the fish camp, very close to the gas explosion as seen in a video showing the explosion, were said to be taking refuge at the Ijaghala community as of Friday, even as there was no report of human casualties as of press time.

Meanwhile, NNPC Limited has confirmed the explosion. The company disclosed that the incident occurred at approximately 5:50 p.m. on December 10, 2025.

Preliminary assessments indicated a sudden pressure drop, suggesting a possible loss of containment on a pipeline operated by the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC).

In a statement issued by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, Andy Odeh, the company noted that the exact cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, but investigations are ongoing.

NNPC Ltd emphasised that the safety of surrounding communities and environmental protection remain top priorities.

The company stated that it has activated its emergency response protocols and is working closely with relevant authorities and community leaders to mitigate the incident’s impact.

NNPC added that it remains committed to upholding the highest safety and environmental standards and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
