The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Kano State chapter, has urged the Kano State House of Assembly to tread carefully in the ongoing impeachment process against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

In a press statement issued on March 5, 2026, and signed by the party’s Kano State Publicity Secretary, Engr. Ibrahim Karaye, the NNPP warned that any move to remove an elected official must be handled with caution, particularly amid what it described as growing political realignments and defections in the state.

The party stressed that ‘an elected official cannot be compelled to take decisions that contradict personal principles or political convictions” noting that the current political climate requires restraint and adherence to democratic norms.

The statement also called on the Kano State Government to avoid actions capable of triggering what it termed an unnecessary political crisis, especially in view of the already tense political environment.

“Members of our party are law-abiding citizens who believe firmly in the rule of law. They should be allowed to freely express their political views without fear of intimidation or prejudice,” the statement added.

LEADERSHIP reports the NNPP’s caution comes on the heels of impeachment proceedings initiated by lawmakers against Deputy Governor Gwarzo earlier today. During plenary, the lawmakers presented a notice of impeachment in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which outlines the legal procedure for the removal of a deputy governor.

The deputy governor is accused of gross misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust. According to the lawmakers, the allegations relate to his tenure as commissioner for local government between 2023 and 2024, as well as his current role as deputy governor.
