The Osun State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has charged the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission to remain focused and conduct credible local government elections.
The state chairman of the party, Dr Tosin Odeyemi, who stated this yesterday in a chat with journalists in Osogbo, stressed the need for democratically elected officials at the state’s tier of government in the face of the federal government’s resolve to grant full autonomy to local government in the country.
Odeyemi said only an enemy of the state would attempt to stop the planned election out of selfish interest, considering the vast human and financial resources already invested in it.
He noted that his party had observed a surprise calumny campaign from certain quarters at the eleventh hour aimed at disrupting the February 22, 2025, local government polls even after OSSIEC held a series of meetings with all stakeholders to ensure a hitch-free election.
“I was surprised to see so many things flying around on social media recently about next month’s poll; why would anybody wait till this moment before raising any objection to the survey or its handlers?
“We have raised concerns about how the state’s ruling party has been spending our collective money.
“Any reasonable person in Osun would know that OSSIEC has committed much to this election. Our party, together with other political parties in the state, APC inclusive, held a meeting with OSSIEC some months ago where we all passed a vote of confidence on the Hassim Abioye-led commission”.
Odeyemi called on OSSIEC not to give room to distraction but rather to ensure a free and fair local government election in the state.
