A former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has declared that there is no going back on the demand for the electronic transmission of election results in the country.
Dalung stated this when he joined other activists to stage a protest against the Senate’s approval of both electronic transmission and manual collation of election results at the National Assembly on Tuesday.
The Senate had approved the electronic transmission of election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal, while allowing manual collation to serve as a backup where technology fails.
Addressing journalists during the protest, the former minister said, “We will sustain this pressure until we get a real-time transmission of results. Nothing less than that.”
He said his protest against the President Bola Tinubu- led administration was not informed by selfishness but genuine concern for the country.
“It’s not about being part of the government. It’s about creating good elections. Being part of the government does not at all impede the struggle to get credible elections. We are talking about the integrity of our electoral process.
“So it’s not about the primordial or mundane sentiment. Because free and fair elections transmit to good governance. So it’s not about individuals,” he said.
End.
