The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has said that it was going ahead with the scheduled local government elections in the state on Saturday.

Recall that the Nigerian Police had, in a statement issued on Friday, announced the withdrawal of its operatives from the exercise following a judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja stopping the elections.

But, RSIEC, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday morning by its Commissioner in-charge of Civic Education and Public Affairs, Pastor Tamunotonye Tobins, said there was no going back on the elections.

Tobins disclosed that the commission has transported non-sensitive materials to polling units across the state.

He stated that the updated 2023 voter register has been made available at all the 6,366 polling units in the state.

Tobins described the exercise as critical and in line with the order to RSIEC from the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
