The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun has clarified that the newly introduced 5 percent fuel surcharge would not be implemented immediately. The minister made the clarification on Tuesday at a press conference in his Abuja office.
The minister also said the fuel tax will not be implemented in January 2026 when other taxes that were signed by President Bola Tinubu this year would be implemented.
“As of today, no immediate plan to implement such a charge,” the minister said in a reaction to the public pushback that has greeted the fossil fuel law which the minister said was not new but simply harmonised in the ongoing tax reform exercise of the federal government.
He noted that the law would require a commencement order of the finance minister through a gazette.
Edun said the government would have to engage and consult with stakeholders to create awareness before its implementation.
