The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise, shifting it to a period after the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached during a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday, where key electoral matters were reviewed.
In a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC said the postponement followed deliberations on the timing and implications of the exercise.
The Commission explained that the voter revalidation exercise is a critical component of its mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters.
According to INEC, the exercise is designed to verify and update existing voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the overall integrity of the voter register.
It also provides an opportunity for registered voters to confirm their details and make necessary corrections where required.
Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, assuring Nigerians that all necessary measures would be taken to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the 2027 polls.
The Commission, however, did not indicate a specific timeline for when the revalidation exercise would be conducted after the elections.
