The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr Habu Gumel, alongside members of the Olympic community in Nigeria, has expressed profound sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences following the tragic death of 22 athletes from Kano State. The athletes were returning from the recently concluded 22nd National Sports Festival, known as the ‘Gateway Games 2024’, held in Ogun State.
These athletes, part of the Team Kano contingent for the Gateway Games, tragically lost their lives in a motor accident approximately 50 kilometres from Kano.
In a statement released by its Public Relations Officer, Tony Nezianya, the NOC emphasised that the loss of these remarkable individuals—who were not only talented athletes but also champions and role models—represents a significant tragedy that has reverberated throughout the sporting community.
“Among the deceased are those who proudly represented their state, bringing home medals alongside their devoted coaches and supportive administrative officials.
“Their dedication, hard work, and passion for sports have inspired many, and their absence will be keenly felt by all who knew them.
“As we grapple with this heartbreaking incident, let us remember and honour their contributions to our sports community and the joy they brought to our lives.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families enduring this unimaginable pain, as well as with all those affected by this devastating loss.
“May their souls rest in peace, and may we find strength in one another during this difficult time.”
