The North West Development Commission (NWDC) has cancelled its recently announced foreign scholarship scheme, citing a new directive from the federal government to prioritise local educational development.
The announcement was made in a post on the commission’s official X handle where it explained that the decision was in line with the federal government’s commitment to strengthen local institutions and build indigenous capacity.
“The North West Development Commission (NWDC) announces the cancellation of applications for foreign scholarships, in line with the Federal Government’s recent directive to prioritize local education in Nigeria,” the statement read.
This follows the announcement by the Federal Ministry of Education on May 7, 2025, signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo where government emphasised renewed focus on improving the quality of education within the country and reducing dependence on foreign academic programmes.
While the NWDC has not disclosed immediate alternatives to the cancelled foreign scholarship scheme, it assured the public that updates on new regional development initiatives will be provided in due course.
“The commission remains committed to aligning its programmes and initiatives with the Federal Government’s policies and priorities,” the announcement stated.
