The Northern Christian Youth Coalition has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, citing what it described as grave allegations that could undermine Nigeria’s security architecture.
The group made the call in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by its National Coordinator, Jeremaid Hudso Bako, saying the demand was necessary to uphold accountability and restore public confidence in government institutions.
Bako said the recent dismissal of Farouk Ahmed as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority demonstrated the administration’s willingness to promote transparency, but insisted that the same standard should apply to other senior officials facing serious allegations.
According to the coalition, allegations against the Minister of State for Defence raise concerns about the integrity of the nation’s defence system at a time of widespread insecurity.
The group said Nigeria continues to battle banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes, adding that retaining a defence official facing serious accusations could weaken public trust and national security efforts.
“The defence of the nation is a sacred responsibility that demands the highest level of ethical conduct and accountability,” the statement said.
The coalition argued that the Ministry of Defence plays a critical role in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and protecting citizens, warning that any perceived compromise within the ministry could amount to a failure of leadership.
The group further said the Tinubu administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and good governance must be reflected in decisive action against officials whose conduct raises integrity concerns.
It warned that failure to act on the allegations against Matawalle could send a contradictory message and undermine the administration’s stated reform agenda.
The coalition also said removing the minister would set an important precedent for governance, reinforcing the principle that public office holders must be held accountable for their actions.
The group urged the President to act swiftly, stating that national security depends on the integrity of those entrusted with leadership positions.
