The League of Northern Democrats has donated N50 million to the Borno State government to support relief efforts for victims of the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
The donation was announced during a visit by a high-powered delegation of Northern politicians and statesmen to the Borno State Government House on Wednesday.
Speaking on behalf of the League, the former Kano State Governor, who is also the Chairman, Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau, extended its heartfelt sympathy to the people of Borno over the tragedy, which resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property and the outbreak of diseases in flood-affected areas.
Shekarau lauded the swift and decisive actions taken by the state government, under the leadership of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
Shekarau emphasised that the group’s contribution was collected from individual donations ranging from N10,000 to N2 million from members across the Northern region.
He reiterated that the League of Northern Democrats is a non-partisan group committed to addressing key political and developmental challenges in the North and that their support transcends party affiliations.
“We are here to express our solidarity with the government and people of Borno State in this difficult time. This N50 million contribution is our way of supporting the tireless efforts of the state government to alleviate the sufferings of those affected by the floods,” Shekarau said.
He praised the role of traditional leaders, particularly the Shehu of Borno, for providing moral and spiritual support during the crisis.
Governor Zulum, in response, expressed profound gratitude for the donation, acknowledging the League’s commitment to the well-being of the people of Borno.
He commended the League for their solidarity during a crisis, stating that the gesture was not just about the amount donated but the spirit of compassion behind it.
He assured the delegation that the funds would be used effectively to provide much-needed relief to those impacted by the disaster.
Governor Zulum acknowledged the significant impact of the floods, which resulted in many residents’ loss of lives and livelihoods.
Zulum also highlighted his administration’s continued efforts to deliver the dividends of democracy and praised the collective efforts of Nigerians to support Borno State.
The delegation also visited the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), where the Chief Medical Director, Prof Ahmed Adhijo, took them around the damaged facilities in the hospital, which amounted to billions of naira in loss.
