The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed deep sorrow and described the passing of former President of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd.), as a profound national loss.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, passed away in London on Sunday.
In an official statement signed by NEF Spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, the Forum described the late Buhari as a “towering figure in Nigeria’s political and historical landscape,” noting his legacy of integrity, discipline, and unwavering service to the nation.
“The entire nation mourns the departure of a statesman of rare character,” the statement read. “General Buhari’s life was marked by unwavering dedication, humility, and incorruptible service to Nigeria.”
General Buhari’s public service spanned several decades, beginning with his role as Military Governor of the former North-Eastern State (1975–1976) and later of Borno State. He also served as Federal Commissioner (Minister) of Petroleum, and held senior positions in the Nigerian Army, including General Officer Commanding and Military Secretary at Army Headquarters. He became Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later returned as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
“General Buhari was not only a soldier and statesman, but a symbol of integrity and principled leadership,” Jiddere stated. “He was resolute in his belief in a unified, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria. His leadership reflected discipline, accountability, and national pride.”
The NEF praised Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s sovereignty and democratic development, noting his commitment to Pan-African ideals and regional stability. “His legacy, defined by sacrifice, duty, and vision, will continue to guide and inspire future generations,” the statement added.
The Forum extended its condolences to the Buhari family, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Nigerian people, offering prayers for strength during this period of national mourning.
“INNALILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHI RAJI’UN — Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return,” the Forum concluded, praying for General Buhari’s eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus.
