Former Ekiti State governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has denounced online reports that he had ditched the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Fayemi’s rumoured defection followed the Monday resignation of the immediate-past governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai who joined the SDP after resigning from the ruling party.

Some online platforms had reported that Fayemi, alongside former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola were on their way to the SDP, just like el-Rufai.

However, responding to the viral report via his verified X on Monday, Fayemi maintained his membership of the ruling party, saying, ‘Nothing has changed.’

“My attention has been drawn to a story circulating on several online platforms regarding my defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC). As I have had cause to state in the past, I am a card-carrying foundation member of the APC and this position has not changed.

“While I have been at the vanguard of demand for greater internal democracy and inclusion in the ruling party, I believe it is still not late for our party to change course and move towards greater inclusion and internal democracy,” the former Ekiti state governor said.

Both Fayemi and Aregbesola were long-standing members of President Bola Tinubu’s inner political circle.

However, while Aregbesola fell out of favour with the president over the belief that he pitched his tent with another candidate in the presidential primary of the APC, Fayemi, who was an aspirant stepped down to endorse the candidacy of Tinubu at the primary of the party in Abuja.
