NPC  Begins Full Digital Birth, Death Registration In Kwara

The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced full digital registration of births and deaths across the 16 local government areas of Kwara State.

The new development marks a major shift from manual documentation to an electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system for the registration of births and deaths in the state.

The federal commissioner representing Kwara State at the NPC, Dr. Yahaya Isiaka Alada announced the commencement of the digital registration of births and deaths during his maiden press conference at the NPC office, Ilorin.

Alada was flanked at the press conference by the Kwara State director of NPC, Mrs Salamat Hameed.

He said the new digital registration, powered by the VitalReg platform, became operational on July 1, 2026, as part of efforts to ensure every birth and death in the state are  accurately captured and securely documented.

He said the initiative is expected to improve service delivery, strengthen data integrity and provide government with reliable demographic information for planning and policy implementation.

“It is my distinct honour and privilege, on behalf of the National Population Commission in Kwara State, to formally announce the full commencement of the digital registration of births and deaths on the VitalReg platform under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system,” Alada said.

He explained that the initiative followed the national launch of the E-CRVS system and the inauguration of the National Coordination Committee on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 8, 2023.

Alada noted that while Kwara records thousands of births every year, many births and deaths still go unregistered, leaving many residents without legal identity and depriving government of accurate data needed for effective planning and resource allocation.

To close the gap, he disclosed that the commission has established 92 functional registration centres across the state’s 16 local government areas and is working to expand the network,  while strengthening collaboration with stakeholders to improve the capacity of registration personnel.

He said the VitalReg platform would provide faster registration services, round-the-clock online access, digital certificate issuance where applicable, reduced paperwork and travel, improved data accuracy through automated validation, and a more secure database that will support other government data systems.

Alada disclosed that the NPC has signed a pact a partnership compact  on the decentralisation and and localisation of birth registration and legal identity with the  Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

Alada also assured residents that birth registration and birth notification services remain highly subsidised and that the review would not create barriers to access.

He thanked  the Kwara State government, local government councils, healthcare institutions, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups and the media for their continued support, saying their collaboration was vital to the success of the digital registration programme.
