The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced a groundbreaking financial package for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), with the winners of the 2026-27 season set to receive a record N1 billion prize.

The new incentive structure represents a significant increase in financial rewards across the league and is aimed at improving competitiveness, professionalism and player welfare within Nigeria’s top-flight competition.

Under the revised scheme, the runners-up will earn N800 million, while the team finishing third will receive N700 million. Clubs lower down the table will also benefit from financial rewards based on their final league positions.

In another major development, the NSC has approved a minimum monthly salary of N2 million for NPFL players, a move expected to improve players’ living standards and encourage greater professionalism across the league.

The announcement marks a dramatic increase from previous prize allocations. Last season, champions Enugu Rangers received N150 million for winning the title, while former champions Remo Stars earned N100 million.

Football stakeholders have welcomed the reforms, describing them as a potential turning point for domestic football in Nigeria. The enhanced prize money and improved salary structure are expected to attract investment, strengthen clubs financially and encourage talented players to remain in the country.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the NSC to raise standards within Nigerian football and position the NPFL among the leading leagues on the African continent.
