Team Nigeria athletes currently training in Aberdeen, Scotland, have received a major morale boost after the National Sports Commission (NSC) paid their full camp allowances for the three-week pre-Games training programme ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The prompt payment has been warmly welcomed by both athletes and officials, who are said to be in high spirits as preparations intensify for the Games, which begin next week.
Members of Team Nigeria are using the Aberdeen training camp to fine-tune their preparations before moving to Glasgow for the multi-sport event, where the country is aiming for a strong medal haul.
The NSC said the payment of camp allowances forms part of its athlete-centred welfare policy, designed to ensure competitors are fully focused on performance without financial distractions.
Officials believe that guaranteeing the welfare of athletes before competition is essential to achieving success on the international stage.
The commission noted that the initiative is intended to ensure Team Nigeria athletes are psychologically, emotionally and motivationally prepared to compete for podium finishes across the various sports in Glasgow.
The positive atmosphere in camp reflects growing confidence within the Nigerian contingent, with athletes expressing appreciation for the welfare package and the improved level of support provided by the commission.
The NSC has repeatedly stressed that athlete welfare remains a top priority under its ongoing reforms, with enhanced incentives, prompt payment of allowances and improved training conditions forming part of efforts to create an environment in which Nigerian athletes can thrive.
With just days remaining before the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria will continue its final phase of preparations in Aberdeen before travelling to the Games Village.
Nigeria is expected to compete in several sports and will be targeting podium finishes as the country seeks to reinforce its status as one of Africa’s leading sporting nations at the Commonwealth Games.
