Commander of the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre (NSSRCC) of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Commandant Hammed Abodunrin, said yesterday that plans were on to educate school children on how to identify potential threats and protect schools from attacks.
Abodunrin who described education as the greatest gift that anybody can give loved ones said all hands must be on deck to ensure that school children are safe both at the learning environment and in their respective domains, hence the urgent need to train them on being conscious of happenings around them.
This is contained in a statement signed by the public relations officer of the corps, CSC Babawale Zaid Afolabi.
Abodunrin, who explained that his previous assignments as Ondo and Ogun states commandant had equipped him with the strategies needed to face his new responsibility
“No teacher can conveniently perform his/her job in an unsafe environment. In
the same way, no student will be able to learn effectively in a threatened atmosphere,” he said.
He added that to successfully teach students and teachers how to ensure personal security and the protection techniques needed to detect dangers, they must first have a positive mind-set.
Dr Abodurin said, “To avoid attacks or the threat of violence in schools, we will further implement a number of measures to provide alternative delivery of education. It is no longer new that schools in a number of countries have chosen to implement school-based safety and security plans that would leave us all better prepared to prevent and respond effectively to attacks on students, teachers and school buildings,” he added.
The NSSRCC was established on February 13, 2023 for advocacy, sensitisation and capacity building regarding the Safe School Initiative Project. It is domiciled at the NSCDC national headquarters in Abuja.
