Abia State commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Usman Alfadarai, has said the command is promoting food security in the state in line with the mandate of the corps.
Alfadarai spoke to LEADERSHIP in Umuahia, the state capital as the farming season has set in in the state, adding that the protection is being provided by the Agro Rangers Unit of the command.
“The unit is charged with the responsibility of providing security at agro-industries, food storage facilities and preventing farmer/herder clashes,” he further stated.
He said one of the first steps he took on assumption of office in January was the reactivation of the unit to actualise its mandate “as the farming season was fast approaching.”
“With the setting of the season, we have intensified our surveillance and other precautionary measures in collaboration with other sister security agencies to ensure the success of the unit,” he said.
He said under his watch, the command had recorded many breakthroughs in its mandate, and commended the officers and men for their efforts toward achieving the breakthroughs.
He cautioned the people against taking the law into their hands when provoked and to report such infringement to the security agencies, assuring that the agencies will do the needful.
Alfadarai also appealed to them to continue to provide the command with useful information about the presence and movement of suspected person or persons in their areas.
“We need the cooperation of each other in this fight to rid our society of men of the underworld to ensure that we move about freely and sleep with our two eyes closed,” he said.
