Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI), Ilorin, Kwara State has presented a N2 milion grant to a corps member who distinguished herself in the reduction of post-harvest losses.
Miss Zainab Adam, who engaged in smoked fish business, was praised at a training programme for corps members on value addition to agricultural commodities.
At the presentation and opening ceremony of the training programme for 50 corps members in the state, the executive director of NSPRI, Prof. Lateef Sanni, said post-harvest losses had led to increase in prices of agricultural commodities.
Sanni, who lamented effects of 40-55% losses in post-harvest losses in the country, said close to $200 million was lost globally, adding that 10% of annual post-harvest losses in Nigeria was nothing less than $5billion.
The NYSC state director, Onifade Joshua, who was represented by Mrs. Omolabake Adeniyi, the 50 beneficiaries to utilise the opportunity maximally.
