The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has presented the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Moshood Olohundare Jimoh, with the Crime Fighter of the Year award for his intelligence-led policing strategy and crime reduction in Lagos and Ogun states.

The honour was conferred in Abuja during the Annual Press Week of the NUJ Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council attended by NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdul and the immediate past President, Chief Chris Isiguzo.

Jimoh, previously the Commissioner of Police in Lagos before his elevation as AIG overseeing Lagos and Ogun states, was commended for spearheading operations that targeted violent crimes and strengthened neighbourhood monitoring.

Former Inspector-General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, was named NUJ Patron. Other awardees were Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Editor-in-Chief of LEADERSHIP Newspapers, Azu Ishiekwene; Sumner Sambo of ARISE TV, and Uyi Amadi of Central TV, among others.

Speaking on behalf of the honourees, AIG Jimoh—2025 Security Officer of the Year at the Security and Emergency Management Awards (SAEMA)— described journalists as critical partners in nation-building, security management and accountability.

“The media remains the mirror that reflects our activities,” he said. “Journalists are not enemies when they publish critical reports. Constructive criticism often serves as a wake-up call for institutions and public officers.”

Jimoh, who served as Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT and later as Force Public Relations Officer, hinted that his longstanding relationship with the NUJ FCT Council significantly shaped his career in policing and public communication.

The senior officer reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to community-oriented and people-centred policing.

He lauded journalists in the nation’s capital for their patriotism, professionalism and support for the NPF, saying police regard the media as a strategic bridge between law enforcement agencies and citizens in promoting effective policing and public trust.

Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Ms. Grace Ike, stressed the importance of factual reporting, as well as stronger collaboration among media stakeholders to combat disinformation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

She described the award recipients as distinguished professionals whose dedication to truth, excellence and public service continues to strengthen confidence in institutions and democratic governance.

Former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, who spoke on the theme “Defending Democracy in an Era of Disinformation,” warned that fake news, propaganda and manipulated narratives pose serious threats to national unity and democratic stability.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, represented by the Director of Defence Information Major General Samaila Uba, encouraged journalists to embrace objective, balanced and conflict-sensitive reporting.

Noting that responsible journalism is key in countering insecurity and depriving terrorists and criminal groups of publicity, he said: “The media remains a critical pillar of our democracy and a vital instrument for national cohesion, public enlightenment and accountability.”

Chairman of LEADERSHIP Newspapers, Mrs. Zainab Nda-Isaiah, praised Nigerian journalists for their courage and professionalism despite operating in hostile environments. She described the media as indispensable to the sustenance of democracy and good governance.
