Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council yesterday honoured Governor Peter Mbah with the Icon of Democracy Award.
The event was part of activities to mark the end of a weeklong 2024 Press Week organised by the Enugu State Council of NUJ.
Mbah, who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremmadu, was among four recipients of this year’s Enugu Council NUJ awards.
Speaking, the chairman of the Enugu State Council of NUJ, Mr Sam Udekwe, said within a short time in office, the governor had demonstrated his desire to develop the state.
“He has shown his determination and the zeal to change the face of development in the state by providing the dividends of democracy to the people.
“We have gone round to see what he has done and we are proud to say that Mbah is on the right part hence we have decided to encourage him, ” Udekwe said.
Ekweremmadu, who received the awards on behalf of the governor hailed the NUJ for recognising the disruptive innovations being undertaken by the administration.
“We are deeply grateful to NUJ for this award coming from the watchdog and safeguard of democracy in the world.
“This means that the press have critically looked at the ongoing innovative disruptions and agreed that His Excellency is on the right part, ” he said.
Ekweremmadu said that the award would spur the governor to do greater things
“With this award, His Excellency will be spurred to do more for Ndi Enugu.
Other awardees included Sen. Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu West senatorial Zone and Prof. Paul Nnamchi, member representing Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives. The weeklong event featured church service and lecture presentations. (NAN)
