Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) have commended the appointment of the publisher of Per Second online newspaper, Femi Soneye, as the chief communications officer of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), describing it as well-timed.

NGE, which is the umbrella body of editors/media executives in Nigeria, made the commendation in a statement signed by its president, Eze Anaba and the general secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, yesterday in Abuja.

The Guild, while congratulating Soneye on his appointment, noted that he was eminently qualified for the position, considering his experience in both the media industry and the public relations field.

“We commend the group chief executive officer of the NNPCL, Mr Mele Kyari, for making the right choice and decision.

‘’Soneye’s appointment comes at a time the NNPC is undergoing a transition following the signing into law of the Petroleum Industry Bill by President Muhammadu Buhari,’’ the NGE stated.

Also, the NUJ in a statement in Abuja signed by its national secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, lauded the appointment.

“We commend the group chief executive officer of the NNPCL, Malam Mele Kyari, and the management for picking a thoroughbred professional as its spokesperson, and the union congratulates Soneye, who is a member of the union, on his well-deserved appointment.

“The Union is excited by this appointment which is well-deserved, and is coming at a time of transition for the oil and gas company and requires an individual such as  Soneye with global expertise and experience in journalism, information, and communications,” it said.

NUJ said the Union is confident that Soneye will discharge his duties diligently, professionally, and transparently owing to the importance of the NNPCL in the nation’s growth and development.
