The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has commenced a three-day training programme for young workers of the union drawn from the 774 local government areas (LGAs) across the country.

The training is aimed at strengthening participants’ administrative skills, leadership capacity and effectiveness in local government service delivery.

Declaring the training open yesterday in Bauchi, Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, said his administration had continued to prioritise good governance and improved service delivery across the state.

The governor, who was represented by the chairman of the Bauchi State Local Government Service Commission, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Wabi, said the state had recorded significant progress across various sectors of the economy.

He noted that the local government system now had a trained and capable workforce equipped to effectively discharge its responsibilities as the third tier of government.

Mohammed urged the participants to acquire new knowledge and develop innovative ideas that would contribute to strengthening local government administration and service delivery across the country.

Speaking on behalf of the NULGE President-General, Comrade Aliyu Haruna Kankara, the Deputy President-General of the union, Comrade Rupus Babalola Adeyemi, described the training as a strategic investment in the future of NULGE and local government administration in Nigeria.

He said the theme of the training, “Empowering Young Workers, Building Leadership and Power Resilience for the Future,” underscored the need to prepare young workers for leadership responsibilities and emerging challenges.

According to him, any union that seeks to remain relevant must continuously invest in developing its young workers and equipping them with the skills required to respond to changing realities.

Kankara assured the participants that NULGE would continue to create opportunities for young workers to participate actively in the development of the union and local government administration.

He said the union had embraced information and communication technology in its operations, urging young workers to acquire relevant digital skills and keep pace with emerging trends.

Earlier, the NULGE president, Bauchi State chapter, Comrade Muhammad Yunusa Dass, said the programme was designed to equip young workers with the administrative and leadership skills needed to prepare them for future responsibilities.

Yunusa said participants were drawn from the 774 LGAs across the country, describing the training as an important platform for strengthening the capacity of the union’s younger workforce.

He commended the Bauchi State Government for clearing the six-year backlog of local government promotion arrears.

He also praised the government for creating new emirates, chiefdoms and districts, saying the measures would bring governance closer to the people.

In his remarks, the representative of young workers, Comrade Safiyanu Abdullahi Dewu, commended NULGE for providing young workers with opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the development of the union and their respective workplaces.

He assured the union that participants would share the knowledge and skills acquired during the training with their colleagues in order to strengthen union activities and improve local government administration across their respective areas.
