The National Union of Road Transport Workers ( NURTW ) has unveiled a remodeled multi-million naira national headquarters built with state of art office equipment in Abuja.
The former national president of the union, Alhaji Najeem Yasin who commissioned the automated four storey building in Abuja also announced the donation of the last floor to the National Open University of Nigeria.
Yasin noted that the donation was part of the union commitment to contributing its quota to the development of national education system.
He urged the leadership of the union to make themselves as ambassador and leave a legacy worthy of emulation adding that power is transient but legacy will live forever.
Speaking to journalists the former president said the union is committed to partnering with the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) in the forthcoming 2023 general elections to ensure safe delivery of sensitive materials.
He added that the union would stick to the agreement he had with the electoral body stating that they have never failed before in delivering sensitive election materials for the election.
Najeem also ruled out the insinuation that its members may be used by the politicians as political thugs to intimidate electorates during the general elections.
He said, “The last floor of the building is given to the Open University of Nigeria, we donated that place free as way of contributing our quota to the development of education in Nigeria.
We have a very good understanding and Memorandum of Agreement with the INEC and we stick to that agreement, i can assured you that we are ever ready to perticipate in the upcoming elections. Our members cannot be used as thugs, NURTW is a professional labour union and our members are law abiding and good citizens of this country”.
