A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Taraba State, Rev. Jolly Nyame, has resigned his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing alleged marginalisation and poor treatment of his people.
Rev. Nyame, in a video clip circulating in social media, disclosed this when he addressed his support group on Tuesday in reaction to the verdict of the Federal High Court sitting in Jalingo.
The former governor said he met with his supporters and stakeholders from Zing local government area before taking the decision to withdraw his membership from the APC for “a platform that will enable him provide needed service and leadership to the people.”
According to him, he decided to join forces with “other brothers”, who are committed to the progress and development of the area.
Nyame, then expressed displeasure over the unfair treatment meted out to him and his people despite their contributions and loyalty to the party.
“As the Dabon Yarro and leader of the entire Yorro community worldwide, comprising Mumuye, Yandan, Yorti and others, if they will not honour me, who then will they honour among my people?” he asked.
“If they can treat me this way, then they can do the same to any other person from the community.”
The former governor lamented that, people from his zone had continued to suffer political suppression and exclusion over the years, and stressed that they had been denied opportunities and lacked a strong voice in the affairs of the state.
“It is sad and disturbing that today I will not be honoured. If they will not honour us, then it is better for me to go where I will be respected,” he said.
Rev. Nyame noted that, pressure from his supporters and community members had intensified ahead of the 2027 general elections, with many urging him to contest for elective office.
According to him, the agitation by the people was not driven by personal ambition but by the desire to rescue the zone from continued neglect.
“At my age, it is not a must for me to contest any elective position, but the pressure from the people is enormous. They believe their voices have been suppressed for too long,” he stated.
He warned that continued silence in the face of alleged injustice against the people of the area could worsen their situation, and stressed the need for urgent action to address their plights.
“It is important for us to act now and take steps to salvage the people. If we continue to fold our hands, it will not be good for them,” he added.
He therefore called on his supporters and those who believe in his leadership to rally behind him in the struggle to “liberate the people from their difficulties.”
