The Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC) has thrown its weight behind the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals to combat illegal mining activities across the country.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the President of the Nigerian Youth Congress, Comrade Jethro Kaluba (Annum), commended the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, for deploying eight gun trucks to strengthen the operational capacity of the Mining Marshals led by Commander Attah Onoja.
According to the statement, the deployment of the operational vehicles demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources and supporting security personnel engaged in the fight against illegal mining.
“These timely interventions will enhance enforcement operations, improve investor confidence in the mining sector, and boost national revenue generation in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu,” the statement said.
The youth body noted that Nigeria was recording measurable progress in the battle against illegal mining, citing reports that more than 300 suspects had been arrested, about 150 offenders prosecuted, and several convictions secured since the establishment of the Mining Marshals.
“These achievements clearly show that the objectives behind the establishment of the Mining Marshals are being realised,” it stated.
The Congress also commended the courage, professionalism and dedication of the officers and men of the special enforcement unit, pledging continued support for the Onoja-led team.
It further called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of individuals, including security personnel, allegedly involved in undermining the operations of the Mining Marshals.
“No individual or institution should be above the law. Discipline, accountability and adherence to the rule of law remain critical to national development,” the statement added.
The NYC described illegal mining as a major threat to Nigeria’s economy and security, noting that the activity deprives the nation of revenue, destroys the environment, fuels criminality and banditry, and undermines economic growth.
The group therefore urged communities, traditional rulers, youth organisations, civil society groups and other stakeholders to support law enforcement agencies with credible information to strengthen the fight against illegal mining across the country.
