Director-general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yasha’u Dogara Ahmed, has charged legal officers to redouble efforts at increasing their capacity, especially in the area of defending the scheme and the public service in Nigeria.
Ahmed gave the charge during the legal officers’ capacity building training with the theme: “The Role of the Legal Officer in Defence of the Public Service in Nigeria,” in Abuja yesterday.
The DG, who was represented by director of legal services, Barrister Ahmed Tijani Ibrahim, said the decision by the management to train and re-train Staff of the Scheme over the years has proven to be very fruitful, especially in the training of legal officers.
To further contribute to the achievements of the Legal Unit, the director general said the training is an ideal platform to evaluate the activities of the Unit with a view to breaking new grounds towards strengthening the values of the scheme.
“In this regard, therefore, I challenge our learned course participants to be attentive to the critical emerging issues in the field which is in line with global best practices, also, so that your knowledge of all aspects of this noble profession will be up to date.
“May I also use this forum to commend the NYSC Legal Officers for adding value to the Scheme through their selfless services.
“May I encourage the legal officers to redouble their efforts at increasing their capacity especially in the area of defending the NYSC in particular and the Public Service in Nigeria in general.”
Tijani lamented the infractions in the NYSC mobilisation process where Corps producing institutions and students connived in forging certificates.
“The infractions are many, like forging the NYSC certificate and persons that are supposed to come for service as specified in the Act are not coming for service and those in service, they will come and will not complete.
“If you go to some of the orientation camps you will discover that some people will come in with a forged document and we have such cases in court of which I cannot easily give you the number involve,” he said.
