T he National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has conducted the training of its legal officers to enhance their performance in complementing government’s efforts towards reforming the justice system in the country.

The director general of NYSC, Brigadier General Muhammad Kaku Fadah, who declared the workshop opened in Abuja yesterday, said the role of legal officers in every organisation is very crucial to its efficiency and success.

Speaking on the theme, “The Role of Legal Officers in Delivering Quality Legal Service in Nigeria,” Fadah who was represented by the Director, Information and Communication Technology, Mrs Christy Uba, said the workshop was essential as it will equip participants, especially the newly Converted Legal Officers, with better knowledge and understanding of their expected roles in Legal Service delivery in the Scheme and Public/Civil Service in general.

“As part of our strategic measures to enhance the NYSC Scheme’s operations for optimal performance, Management recently approved the conversion of some Staff to the Legal Officers Cadre to further strengthen the Legal Unit of the Scheme.

“To this end, I urge participants to partake in the training with keen interest so as to broaden their understanding in their expected roles as Legal Officers in the Scheme, which would greatly enhance the performance of their duties.

“The training will also focus on discussions on the NYSC Act Cap N84 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and the NYSC Bye-Laws which guide the operations of the Scheme,” he added.

On his part, the director, Legal Services, Barrister Tijani Ibrahim said the training was organised for the Scheme’s Legal Officers in line with the Council of Legal Education Policy on continuing legal education Trainings and re-training of Legal Officers to enhance their competence and capacity building on legal service delivery.

“I have no doubt that the training workshop will in no small measure be beneficial to the participants who are drawn from all the NYSC formations across the country, especially those who were recently converted to the Legal Officers Cadre, as it will enhance their competence and practical performance/service delivery.”
