The consensus candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, Dr Ojukwu Nzube, has pledged to prioritise youth empowerment, healthcare reform and economic growth if elected to the House of Representatives.
Nzube committed to Abuja after emerging as the party’s consensus flag bearer following consultations among aspirants and stakeholders aimed at avoiding a contested primary.
He said his agenda would focus on tackling unemployment, improving access to healthcare, and expanding opportunities for small businesses, describing the constituency as one in which many young people remain without meaningful economic support.
“The environment is currently not conducive for young people to thrive. If elected, I will ensure that a significant portion of constituency resources is directed towards youth empowerment and engagement,” he said.
Nzube also promised targeted interventions for small and medium-scale enterprises, arguing that access to capital remains one of the biggest barriers to growth for traders and young entrepreneurs in the area.
“Many traders operate with very little capital. With adequate support, they can expand and create more jobs. That is one practical way to reduce unemployment,” he said.
On healthcare, the NDC candidate described the condition of some primary health centres in the constituency as poor, citing a recent visit to a facility in Wasa, where he observed inadequate equipment and staffing.
He pledged to push for the revitalisation of primary healthcare centres and to improve the recruitment of medical personnel if elected.
“Our health facilities need urgent attention. We must ensure doctors, nurses and essential equipment are available so that people, especially expectant mothers, are not left without care in emergencies,” he said.
Nzube said effective representation goes beyond lawmaking, stressing the need for legislators to actively engage federal agencies to attract development projects to their constituencies.
Meanwhile, party stakeholders said the consensus arrangement was reached following consultations among aspirants and leaders to prevent internal disputes ahead of the election.
They said the decision was aimed at promoting unity within the party and ensuring a smooth electoral process going into the general elections.
Party figures also urged the leadership to ratify the consensus arrangement in line with electoral procedures.
Nzube reaffirmed his commitment to what he described as people-centred representation, saying the party intended to present a credible alternative to improve governance and service delivery in the constituency.
