Nigerian comedian and content creator Adebayo Ridwan, popularly known as Isbae U, hosted former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his viral YouTube roast-and-interview show, Curiosity Made Me Ask.
When Isbae U opened the episode by sarcastically claiming Obasanjo was his former employee, whose salary, food, and Aso Rock rent he paid from 1999 to 2007, Obasanjo took the banter in stride, playing along with the lighthearted atmosphere on set.
Isbae U tested Obasanjo’s knowledge of modern Nigerian pop culture by asking whether he knew figures such as music producer Don Jazzy, dancer Poco Lee, or creator Carter Efe. Obasanjo responded directly that he had no idea who they were.
The show host pointed out that these entertainers definitely know who the former president is. Obasanjo shut down the banter with a witty counter. ”So you know people that I don’t know. Maybe because they are not important people, as he only keeps company with “important people” like King Charles III.
The show host tried to poke fun at him for reaching for a glass of water without “asking for permission.” Obasanjo met the comedian’s boldness with dry humour, maintaining his elder-statesman aura while completely deflecting Isbae U’s attempts to rattle him.
The episode quickly went viral across Nigerian social media, with fans and celebrities expressing shock and amusement at Isbae U landing an elder statesman for his roast-style show.
Celebrities like Nkechi Blessing Sunday, stylist Toyin Lawani, and actor Jide Awobona flooded the comments, praising Isbae U for securing an elder statesman for his show. Many playfully warned the host that his “savage” roasts might get him in trouble, with Nkechi Blessing humorously commenting, “You go land for Kirikiri.”
Fans joked online about how Isbae U inadvertently set up those celebrities to take “stray bullets” on national digital media.
The episode prompted political humor, with fans asking Isbae U to host other political leaders. Some jokingly dared him to bring President Bola Tinubu on the show next to test his bravery.
