Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), on Sunday visited Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, at his Miller Road residence in Kano, in a meeting that has sparked fresh political speculation.

Speaking during the annual Kwankwassiya Sallah celebration, Obi downplayed political motives behind the visit, stating that his presence was to honour the festive occasion and pay respect to Kwankwaso.

“I’m here to felicitate with you on the occasion of Sallah and to pay my respect to our leader,” he said, while also outlining his vision for economic revival in Kano.

Obi emphasised the need to restore Kano’s industrial strength, referencing once-thriving hubs such as Bompai and Sharada, and institutions like the Bank of the North. He noted that rebuilding these sectors would be key to reviving the state’s economic fortunes.

The visit underscores ongoing efforts by Obi and his allies to strengthen engagement in northern Nigeria, while positioning themselves around a message of economic development and national unity.

Kwankwaso, in his remarks, welcomed the guests and expressed delight at the show of solidarity during the Sallah celebration, describing the gathering as a moment of unity among leaders and supporters.

Also present were Seyi Makinde, Seriake Dickson, and activist Naajatu Mohammed, among other notable figures.

The high-profile gathering has fuelled discussions around a possible political realignment, particularly amid suggestions that Kwankwaso could consider a move from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
